Diamond Education

To help you make an informed decision when buying diamonds, the 4Cs are the most universal method for
assessing the quality/value of the diamond you are purchasing.

Color

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond on a scale from D to Z. Diamonds graded D are completely colorless, while those graded Z exhibit noticeable color. The GIA evaluates color by examining the absence of color, with the ideal diamonds being those that appear as colorless or near-color. This grading system helps buyers understand the quality and value of a diamond based on its color characteristics.

Color

Clarity

Diamond clarity grading according to GIA standards evaluates the presence of internal or external imperfections, known as inclusions and blemishes. The GIA uses a scale ranging from Flawless (no inclusions visible under 10x magnification) to Include inclusions visible to the naked eye). This grading helps buyers understand the quality and value of a diamond, as clarity can significantly impact its appearance and price. Understanding these grades is essential for making informed purchasing decisions.

Clarity

Cut

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) uses a grading system to evaluate diamond cuts, focusing on how well a diamond reflects light. The GIA grades cut quality on a scale from Excellent to Poor, considering factors such as brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Key elements assessed include the diamond's proportions, symmetry, and polish. This grading helps consumers understand the quality of a diamond's cut, ensuring they make informed purchasing decisions.

Cut

Carat Weight

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond weight based on the actual weight of the diamond, measured in carats. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. GIA's grading system emphasizes that carat weight is just one of the four Cs—cut, color, clarity, and carat weight—that a diamond's overall quality and value. Larger diamonds are rarer and typically more valuable, but the overall appearance and quality of the stone also play a significant role in its worth.
